Meet Monroe.
Monroe Rodriguez is a Philadelphia-born singer-songwriter and published poet. He writes in English, French, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, and has lived in Haiti, Morocco, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and Brazil.
He started on flute, then keyboard and guitar, before finding his way to tabla and the percussion of West Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. His music draws on R&B, neo-soul, funk, jazz, and contemporary Latin sounds alongside Indigenous, Brazilian, Indo-Caribbean, and African spiritual traditions.
Trained in traditional visual art and Indigenous theater, he makes songs and images from the same place: love, longing, devotion, and the forces you cannot see.
